The Michigan Democrat completely liquidated his position in the company formerly known as MicroStrategy but waited nearly 10 months to report it.

Key facts

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) executed a highly prescient exit from Strategy Inc (formerly MicroStrategy Incorporated), a prominent Bitcoin proxy, just before the stock embarked on a steep downward slide.

According to congressional disclosures, Thanedar sold between $15,001 and $50,000 of the stock on Oct. 21, 2025. Since that transaction, the company's stock price has plummeted by 60.5%, falling from $301.91 at the time of the sale to $119.25 today.

However, the public did not learn of this perfectly timed divestment until Aug. 13, 2026—some 296 days after the trade occurred. Members of Congress are required by the STOCK Act to disclose trades within 45 days, and disclosed amounts are reported in ranges. Thanedar's filing was 251 days past the legal deadline.

Strategy Inc, which rebranded from MicroStrategy in August 2025, operates as a self-described "Bitcoin Treasury Company" alongside its enterprise software business. The company's stock is highly volatile, acting as a leveraged proxy for cryptocurrency markets.

While the long-term timing of Thanedar's exit looks spectacular, his short-term timing was less optimal. Just nine days after his sale, on Oct. 30, 2025, Strategy Inc reported a blockbuster Q3 earnings result, posting a net income of $2.8 billion driven by massive bitcoin valuation gains. Our analysis scored the trade a low 16 out of 100 for insider trading risk, suggesting the sale was likely a routine capital gains harvest or portfolio rebalancing rather than a trade based on non-public information.

Thanedar had previously purchased the stock in July 2024, holding it for 15 months through a major cryptocurrency bull cycle. Due to a research limitation, his specific committee assignments at the time of the transaction were not retrieved, meaning no direct regulatory oversight link can be established.

For a lawmaker who rarely trades—disclosing only two transactions in the past year—the late filing is a notable omission, leaving the public in the dark about his crypto-linked exposure for nearly ten months.

In the volatile world of crypto, timing is everything—even if the paperwork is nearly a year late.
